Human Givens

Living things interact with their environment to stay alive. This is a given.

Humans, however, have more in mind than just staying alive. Their lives need to have meaning, they need to be challenged and stimulated, and their connection with others needs to be rewarding.

Of all living things, humans have the most control over how they interact with their environment in order to get their needs met. They have resources like imagination, long-term memory, the capacity to learn and the ability to dream.

When humans are using these resources and getting their needs met they flourish. When needs are not met and resources are not used, humans just stay alive or die. These are also givens - bedrock truths.

The term 'human givens' represents a set of ideas that help us understand what it means to be human: ideas that also provide a framework for helping people to flourish, not just stay alive.
